Three Things I'd Add After Years of Checking
I manage procurement for a small B2B machined-parts shop. Seven years in, I've personally made (and documented) 11 significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $28,000 in wasted budget and delayed jobs. I now keep a checklist so I don't repeat them. This is that checklist.
If you're ordering PET, nylon, or machined stock from a supplier like Ensinger, this is for you. Five steps, maybe 30 minutes to run. It's not the only way, but it's the way I wish I'd had in 2018.
Who This Checklist Is For
Before we start: this is for B2B buyers who need raw material delivered to specification—not for hobbyists picking up a single sheet. I can't speak to pharmaceutical or aerospace certification; that's a different level of documentation. My context is industrial machining, prototypes, and short-run parts, mostly in North America. Your mileage may vary if you're exporting or working with a regulated end market.
If that's you, here's the short version of what I've learned: the expensive mistake is rarely the material price. It's the compliance gap, the wrong grade, or the missing certificate discovered after the parts are made.
Step 1: Write Down the End-Use Requirement First
I know—this sounds obvious. But in my first year (2017), I did the opposite. I found a cheap PET sheet, then tried to convince everyone it would work for a food-processing guard. It didn't. The order failed because I started with 'PET is safe' and worked backwards.
What I mean is: don't ask 'What material should I buy?' Ask first 'What does the part have to do?—temperature, contact with chemicals, mechanical load, regulatory touches?' Then match the material to that.
The checklist item:
- Define the application and operating environment in one paragraph. (Should mention: include cleaning chemicals—one of my orders failed because the part was wiped with a solvent the material couldn't handle.)
- Identify if any regulations apply: food contact, medical contact, child safety, recyclability claims, or export requirements.
- Only then compare material options.
This is the step most people rush. I rushed it in 2017. $3,800 and two weeks later—actually, three weeks counting the reorder—I learned to stop starting with the material name.
Step 2: Verify PET Compliance Requirements Before You Quote
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a workhorse plastic. It's used in packaging, machine guards, wear strips, and lots of custom parts. But 'PET' is not one material. Different grades have different additives, molecular weights, and compliance statuses.
One of the biggest gaps I've seen—no, scratch that—one of the biggest gaps I've fallen into is assuming 'PET' and 'food-grade PET' are the same. They're not. If the part touches food, you need a specific PET grade with documentation under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630. A good PET supplier will tell you which grade has that letter. If they say 'all our PET is compliant,' I get wary. That's usually an overstatement.
Another compliance angle that gets ignored: marketing claims. If you're labeling your part or packaging as 'recyclable,' the FTC's Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260) require that you be able to substantiate the claim. Are you selling into areas where PET recycling is actually accessible? The supplier's technical data sheet won't answer that. You need to check the claim with your own customer.
So before any PET order, I now ask:
- What is the exact grade name and the manufacturer of the resin?
- Is there a food-contact letter or FDA compliance statement for this specific grade? (Ask for it, don't accept 'we have it somewhere.')
- If we're claiming 'recyclable,' can we substantiate that per FTC Green Guides?
- Does the material have any export restrictions? (Don't hold me to this, but some formulations are specified for regional markets.)
That second question—'which specific grade?'—sounds unnecessary until you find a bag without a lot trace. Then it's too late.
Step 3: Treat Nylon Wholesale as a Traceability Exercise, Not a Price Match
Nylon wholesale is a different animal. Nylon is hygroscopic; it absorbs moisture, and that affects processing. I once ordered 750 kg of nylon 6, checked the price, checked the data sheet, approved it. We didn't check the moisture-as-shipped or the lot history. The result? Badly machined parts, condensation voids, and a customer who asked a question I couldn't answer: 'What's the lot number and can you prove this is the same resin as the approved sample?'
The numbers said the wholesale supplier was 11% cheaper than our previous source. My gut said their documentation was too thin. I went with the numbers. That was a mistake. The parts failed dimensional inspection, and the redo cost more than the savings—about $1,200 for redo plus a missed delivery window. Looking back, I should have requested a small batch first and a lot-level certificate before committing.
What I do now for nylon wholesale:
- Require the exact resin trade name and supplier code.
- Ask for lot traceability—batch number, manufacturing date, and test reports tied to that lot.
- Check moisture handling: How was it packed? Desiccants? When was it made? Nylon that sits too long absorbs moisture before you even open the box.
- If the material comes from Ensinger or similar specialty processors, use their technical service—that's usually free and can save you from 'same name, different formulation' issues.
Why does this matter? Because a 'PA6' from one source can process differently than the same 'PA6' from another. Chemically similar doesn't mean behaviorally identical. I learned that the expensive way.
Step 4: Confirm the Form, the Finish, and the 'Small Print'
This is the step most people overlook—not the material, but the form of the material. When a buyer says 'I need PET,' do they mean sheet, rod, pellets, or film? I once ordered 'PET sheet' and the supplier sent a roll of PET film. It wasn't wrong exactly—it just wasn't what our CNC machine could handle. Not ideal. Expensive. My fault for not specifying '100% sheet, no rolls.'
Ensinger plastics is a good example of a supplier that offers many shapes—rods, plates, and specialty profiles. If you order 'Ensinger special polymers' without saying the exact shape, dimensions, and tolerance, you're giving the supplier permission to make assumptions. In a good relationship, they'll call you. But not every salesperson does.
My checklist for this step:
- Specify form: sheet, rod, tube, film, pellets, or custom profile.
- Specify dimensions and tolerances. If you're not sure, ask the supplier to help—they usually know the standard tolerances better than you will.
- Clarify finish: natural extruded, cast, annealed, UV-stabilized, or something else.
- Get the exact product code. 'PET' isn't a product code. A product code is something like 'PET-G flat sheet, 3 mm, natural, one side masked.'
In other words, the more of the order you've defined in writing, the less room for interpretation. I've done this enough to know: 'data sheet attached' is not the same as 'all specs confirmed.'
Step 5: Run a Pilot Lot Before You Commit to Full Volume
This one will save you the most heartache. If you're switching PET suppliers or trying a new nylon wholesale batch, don't replace a full order in one shot. Run a pilot lot: same part, same process, same operator, same measurement routine. Compare with the existing material.
I'm not 100% sure why this isn't standard practice everywhere. Maybe because it feels slower. But in my experience, pilot lots are the cheapest insurance you can buy. The pilot doesn't have to be big—just enough to make 10 parts and check them thoroughly.
The question isn't 'will it pass your spec?' The question is 'will it pass the same as the material your customer already approved?' That distinction matters more than any data sheet.
Three Things I'd Add After Years of Checking
1. Don't rely on one document. A data sheet is a starting point, not a guarantee. Ask for batch test reports tied to the lot you're actually buying.
2. Trust hesitation. Every time I've had a gut feeling about a supplier and suppressed it, I've regretted it. Good documentation is not a guarantee of good material, but missing documentation is a pretty strong warning.
3. Note the limits of your own expertise. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. A supplier who says 'this is not our area; here's who does it better' earns trust for everything else. Same applies to you—know what you're buying and what you're not.
This checklist is not magical. It took me years of avoidable mistakes—$28,000 and a fair amount of embarrassment—to build. Since I wrote it down, we've caught 34 potential problems before they became production delays. That's enough proof for me.
If you have a specific material question—especially about Ensinger special polymers or PET compliance requirements—ask your supplier for the same paperwork you'd want from anyone. If they can't provide it, that's not a judgment call. It's a reminder to slow down.
